Good analysis. I'm a blogger, and I keep track of my stats. My blog is focused on Biblical answers to questions and issues; one thing I have found is that my readers are generally more interested in posts related to current issues in society than in posts more specifically focused on interpreting and comparing Bible passages. This has become especially apparent this year, as many of my older posts focused on trends and issues in society have gained a good number of views: in fact, some have become significantly more popular when compared with some newer posts over the same time span. This makes sense to me since there are plenty of non-Christians who are interested in societal trends and issues. I've also noticed--no surprise!--that sharing has a significant impact on popularity.
